The Government has confirmed KiwiRail will operate New Zealand’s two new Cook Strait rail ferries, Kupe and Cook, securing an integrated, long term freight and passenger link. KiwiRail’s improved reliability and earnings underpin the commercial arrangement, under which it will pay full port fees and operate the vessels for 30 years, with review in 2039. The programme caps taxpayer funding at NZ$1.7 billion and saves NZ$2.3 billion compared with the previous iReX project. The ferries are being built by Guangzhou Shipyard International.

The Hong Kong Government has welcomed LegCo’s passage of the Huanggang Port Hong Kong Port Area Bill, establishing the legal basis for co-location arrangements at the redeveloped port. Following the State Council’s confirmation of the port area boundaries, the Ordinance will take effect on July 31, enabling Hong Kong to exercise jurisdiction there. Subsidiary legislation will support closed area management, transport and communications. The redevelopment will introduce collaborative inspection, cutting clearance time from 30 minutes to about five, with capacity rising to 200,000–300,000 daily trips.

Guangzhou Library is strengthening cultural exchange by offering 188,000 foreign language materials in 19 languages, including Māori, the indigenous language of Aotearoa New Zealand. Māori resources are available alongside major world languages in the library’s Multicultural Library and Language Learning Library, giving readers access to a diverse linguistic landscape. The inclusion of Māori reflects growing global recognition of indigenous languages and supports learners interested in Māori, its culture and worldview.

China expects CNY4 trillion in new direct investment for computing power networks during the 15th Five Year Plan (2026–2030), the National Development and Reform Commission said, noting strong opportunities for private capital. The investment forms part of the country’s wider “Six Networks” initiative, covering water systems, new type power grids, computing power infrastructure, next generation communications, urban pipeline networks and logistics.

Hong Kong’s Secretary for Environment and Ecology, Tse Chin wan, travelled to Shenzhen on 27 July to attend the 2026 APEC Ministerial Meeting on Forestry (FTMM). During the visit, Tse witnessed the signing of the Shenzhen–Hong Kong Joint Botanical Garden Co operation Agreement, strengthening cross boundary collaboration in conservation and ecological research. He joined APEC ministers on 28 July to discuss forest conservation, sustainable management, ecological livelihood balance and technological innovation.

Cathay Pacific will increase its Christchurch–Hong Kong service to five flights a week during the peak summer months, strengthening South Island travel options and global connectivity. The seasonal route will operate three times weekly from 1 November 2026 to 27 March 2027, rising to five flights from December to February. Christchurch Airport Chief Executive Justin Watson said the expansion reflects strong South Island demand and will boost opportunities for exporters, with added belly freight capacity supporting premium produce such as cherries, seafood and chilled meat.

China has issued a mandatory national safety standard for Level 3 and Level 4 autonomous driving systems, to take effect on 1 July 2027, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced. Covering M and N category vehicles, the standard requires manufacturers to strengthen safety assurance across the entire product life cycle, including simulation, field and road testing. It sets requirements for dynamic driving performance, human machine interaction and user notification to prevent misuse, and mandates driver readiness monitoring for Level 3 systems.

Auckland’s long awaited City Rail Link (CRL) will open to passengers on 13 September 2026, Transport Minister Chris Bishop and Mayor Wayne Brown have confirmed. The 3.45 kilometre twin tunnel line and new stations at Te Waihorotiu, Karanga a Hape and Maungawhau will transform the city’s rail network with faster journeys, more frequent services and improved cross city connections. Bishop said the milestone reflects years of work by engineers, construction teams, mana whenua and transport agencies.
