The New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong (NZCCHK) in conjunction with New Zealand Trade & Enterprise (NZTE) and the New Zealand Consulate General (NZCG) has established a New Zealand Business Advisory Board (NZBAB) as a means of improving communication between the Chamber, NZTE, NZCG and the Hong Kong and New Zealand business communities.

Business activities between New Zealand and Hong Kong include: (a) a presence of New Zealand persons active in Hong Kong based businesses; (b) a concentration in the food and beverage, forest products, financial services and tourism sectors together with related industries; and (c) New Zealand as a potential investment destination for Hong Kong capital and Hong Kong as a potential destination for New Zealand trade.

The NZBAB will be a fundamental resource for the ongoing implementation of the NZCCHK promotional strategy to raise awareness of New Zealand in the Hong Kong business community.

Objectives

Specific objectives of establishing the NZBAB include:

  • Capitalising on the opportunities presented to New Zealand generally in the Hong Kong business community.
  • Raising the profile of the New Zealand business community in Hong Kong.
  • Ensuring that key sectors of the business community are provided with appropriate communication.
  • Providing strategic advice to NZCCHK and its members, NZTE and selected entities on issues that affect business and investment flows.
  • Providing a high-level strategic link between Hong Kong and New Zealand.
  • Establishing a network of business ambassadors for New Zealand.

Terms of Reference

The NZBAB will provide advice to NZCCHK, NZTE and selected entities on the following matters:

  • Trends and competitive influences that affect the performance and direction of the local economy;
  • Strategies to enhance and promote economic development including a review of NZCCHK and NZTE forward strategy;
  • Influences on the future direction of trade and investment flows;
  • The impact of government policies at a national and local level on business viability; and
  • Opportunities to develop partnerships that enhance business linkages with the business communities.

Selection Criteria

The following criteria assists in determining individuals whom NZCCHK and NZTE may wish to invite to participate as a NZBAB member. Representation will be weighted to reflect the total number of businesses in each sector.

 Criteria includes:

  • A senior business proprietor, board member, property owner and/or employee based in Hong Kong;
  • Visiting members from outside Hong Kong invited on an ad hoc basis;
  • Be prepared to commit sufficient time to allow participation in the activities of the Group;

  • Relevant skills and professional qualities.
  • An ability to complement other members of the NZBAB. Aspects to this will include: (a) representation across New Zealand / Hong Kong; (b) representation across different size businesses; and (c) representation across different sectors.

Members of the Hong Kong business community will be invited to become a member of the New Zealand Business Advisory Board by a selection panel comprising: New Zealand Consul General; Group Managing Director - North Asia, NZTE; and Chairman, New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong
